Artist statements
“My art originates from hallucinations only I can see. I translate the hallucinations and obsessional images that plague me into sculptures and paintings.”
my notes: Kusama’s art captures the eye, and boggles the mind – her works are feminine, yet phallic; feminist at heart, revolutionary in act – it appeals to those who already question these things and confuse those who look past the issues presented. It feels like being part of a community, to instantly get her works; understanding and being understood simultaneously.
“My artwork is an expression of my life, particularly of my mental disease.”
my notes: Kusama’s work often theme endlessness, which her schizophrenia, ocd & anxiety feeds into. Her work on infinity feel feverish; as if she’s searching for something within. I could stare at them for hours and never get bored. They’re similar to hallucinogens to me, which is interesting, because her mental issues trigger hallucinations for her. It’s as if I step into her visions.
