During GraSED, we located, modeled and pinpointed aspects of our memories to be used in a phyiscal installation. Me and Mohammed, a classmate, joined up within the theme of ‘object’ as this played a prominent role in both our memories.
We started off sketching and both ended up with movement as a main component – as well as light and shadow plays. We sketched a lot of options and then went into the wood workshop to think of how to make the kinetic baseframe, as we were only allowed to work with paper and thin, wooden sticks.

The connections we made were made up of toothpics, wooden cubes and glue, all attached to longer wooden sticks ranging in size, between 30 and 80cm.
The frame was then put together on-site, in the basement of the LAB.

Once the frame was up, we started adding paper on-site as well. I had prepared long strips of paper, and added holes in a gradient. At the start of the frame, the holes would be narrow, more like slits. Gradually, they would become rounder, bigger, or shaped like a leaf. This would reference my memory the most, as my memory was based on the willow tree outside my parental home.

The frame turned into a walk-through at eye level. To get through, you were encouraged to move the frame up and down to create space to move. There were bright lights positioned to the side, and above the paper, to create an interesting play of shadows. Besides that, we also left the paper cutouts to serve as a trail to follow.
